Right in the heart of Liverpool’s buzzing leisure scene, The Big Liverpool Bake offers a hands-on baking experience inspired by the much-loved The Great British Bake Off. Created with groups in mind, the space needed to reflect the character of the show, while being durable enough to cope with the demands of a busy commercial venue.

As part of the fit-out, a bespoke timber balustrade system was installed along the venue’s access ramp, using high-quality components from Richard Burbidge. The design needed to provide safe, supportive access while enhancing the character of the space.

What makes this installation unique is the thoughtful use of colour and materials, the balustrade combines Oak HDR handrails with Pine Trademark Complete Posts, Baserails and a mix of Pine Spindles - Imperial, Colonial, Forston and Provincial; allowing for different shapes and profiles to play off each other. The timber’s smooth finish also made it easy to paint, giving the team flexibility to match the balustrade perfectly to the venue’s interiors.

The result is a balustrade that is both practical and expressive. Visitors enjoy the safety and comfort it provides, while the design adds personality and complements the venue’s playful atmosphere. By considering colour, material and the interplay of spindle styles, this project shows how carefully specified stairparts can be used creatively while remaining functional and easy to maintain.
